In Psalm 42, the psalmist gives us a picture of what it feels like to be spiritually dry, overwhelmed, and like wave after wave keeps knocking us down. But even in the depths of despair, he acknowledges his need, brings it honestly before God, and reminds his soul where true hope is found. Instead of allowing his feelings to determine what is true, he chooses to put his hope in God, remembering that the depth of God’s love is greater than the depth of his need. When we stop anchoring our lives to temporary things and fix our eyes on the eternal God, he becomes our solid foundation, bringing peace to our turbulent souls and hope in the darkest nights.
